RATED 91 Drink 2002-2020 Jan 2000 Robert Parker
The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (4,400 cases) could easily pass for a classy Bordeaux in a blind tasting. The nose offers up earth, minerals, black currants, and cigar box/tobacco aromas. This dark ruby/purple-colored wine is lean and tannic, with sweet black currant fruit on the attack, but a dry, angular, tannic finish. There is a sense of weight and ripeness, but this 1995 still needs 4-5 years of cellaring; it will keep for two decades.
I have admired and purchased a number of Anderson’s Cabernet Sauvignons. This Bordeaux-styled wine is aged in barrel, of which 40%-50% is new. Some vintages in the early and mid-nineties have displayed a chalky, astringent tannin level, which may not completely age out of the wines. This chalky tannin character is noticeable in the 1995, 1996 and 1997, but, curiously, not as much in the proprietary red wine, Eloge. Nevertheless, there is a lot to like in these cabernets.
