Dazzles with waves of blackberries, cassis and chocolate, wrapped into the smoothest tannins you can imagine." —– HESTAN Cabernet Napa Valley 2009 Score: 88 Retail Price $170 Country California Region Napa Issue Web Only – 2012 ——————————————————————————– Tasting Note Tight and pleasantly earthy, with loamy soil, grainy tannins and cedary oak. The drying tannins on the finish suggest a long decant or cellaring. Best from 2013 through 2022. 515 cases made. ?JL —————————————————————————————————————————————— On Hestan Vineyards We decided to get into the wine business when we bought this property. Initially, it was 87 acres, supplemented by another 40 acres I purchased from a neighbor. The property is ideal. There?s an 11-acre lake with 145 acre-feet of water, rolling hills, and good soil; and it?s Napa Valley. Growing wine grapes is a natural. We planted vines in ?97 producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc grapes. We sell 30 to 40 tons a year to a high-profile winery and bottle approximately 6,000 cases under our own labels. I don?t think we?ll ever produce more than 10,000 cases. Our high-end Hestan label is more intense, following the traditional Napa Valley perceived wisdom that great wines are full-bodied and more intense. But the greatest wines don?t have to be the most robust. They can be softer, more elegant. They don?t just have to be ?big.? Our Meyer and Stephanie labels are not as intense, and many of our customers prefer them that way. – See more at: http://www.grailmag.com/blog/food-wine/in-his-own-words-stanley-cheng-hestan-vineyards#sthash.G6g5thdl.dpuf
