REAR LABLE

Frank’s Vineyard, located near the 1700 foot level in the northerly portion of Amador Country’s Shenandoah Valley, was planted in 1980 to a mixture of traditional port wine varieties which were originally imported to California from the Douro district of northern Portugal. When properly ripened, these traditional varieties have special flavor characteristics which have become associated with port wines.

We reserve the “vintage port” designation for use only in certain years when climatic conditions result in a superb balance of flavor and potential for improvement in the bottle. Vintage port is made differently from other ports in that it is always bottled early (within a few years of the vintage). This results in the distinguishing features of the wine; the preservation of fruit flavor from the grape, the potential for improvement in the bottle, and the tendency for a deposit (or crust) to form. Decanting (especially if the whole bottle is to be served) is used to separate the clear wine from the deposit.

If cellared, the wine will improve in bottle for many years. It should be stored at cool cellar temperatures on its side.

The label art consists of a detail portion of Edouard Manet’s Luncheon in the Studio, 1868. It was reproduced by permission of the Neue Pinakothek, Munich, German Federal Republic.

Bottled in 1987
